Your Pet's Surgical Journey
A consultation to review medical history and perform a physical exam and bloodwork to ensure your pet is healthy for anesthesia.
The morning of the procedure, you will meet with your dedicated technician to review consent forms and confirm the treatment plan. Your pet is then settled safely into our care for the day.
We use modern, safe anesthetics and advanced monitoring equipment to continuously monitor all vital signs (like heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels.)
Our team works efficiently and with precision, focusing entirely on a successful outcome while minimizing the time your pet spends under anesthesia.
As the anesthesia wears off, your pet is moved to a comfortable, warm recovery area. Our technicians provide continuous, one-on-one attention until your pet is stable and alert for discharge.
Weโll provide detailed post-operative care instructions to set you and your pet up for a successful recovery at home, and schedule any recommended follow-ups to ensure perfect healing.
Post-Operative Care
- Protect the Incision (No Licking!): Please ensure your pet wears the E-collar (cone) 24/7 as directed. Licking is the fastest way to cause infection and can undo the sutures.
- Keep It Quiet: Rest is the best medicine! For the first 10-14 days, your pet needs strict rest. This means no running, jumping, or rough play. Dogs should only be taken outside on a leash.
- Pain Management is Crucial: Give all pain medication exactly as prescribed, even if your pet seems fine. Never give your pet human pain relievers (like Tylenol or Advil), as they are extremely toxic to animals.
- Know When to Call: Watch the incision daily. Please call us right away if you notice excessive swelling, foul odor, discharge, or if your pet refuses to eat or drink for more than 24 hours.
FAQs
About Pet Dental Care
What types of surgeries do you perform?
Our surgical services are comprehensive, covering routine spays and neuters, dental cleanings, and soft tissue surgeries (like tumor removals and bladder stone extractions). Our team includes doctors highly experienced in these areas, and for complex cases, we host a traveling orthopedic surgeon who performs specialty procedures on-site.
When will I receive an estimate for the cost of surgery?
We believe in transparent pricing. Once the need for surgery is confirmed, our team will provide a detailed, itemized written estimate for the procedure, anesthesia, monitoring, and required medications. We review this estimate with you thoroughly and require your approval before scheduling the surgery.
Is anesthesia safe for my pet?
Anesthesia safety is our top priority. We start by performing a thorough assessment to ensure your pet is a good candidate for surgery. We then utilize pre-anesthetic testing and modern monitoring equipment to customize the protocol for your pet’s specific health needs, ensuring the safest experience possible.
Why is pre-surgical bloodwork required?
Pre-surgical bloodwork is mandatory to evaluate the health of your pet’s internal organs, primarily the liver and kidneys. These organs process and eliminate anesthetic drugs. Ensuring they are functioning properly allows us to choose the safest medications and dosages, significantly reducing the risk of complications.
How should I prepare my pet the day before surgery?
The most important preparation is fasting. Unless instructed otherwise for medical reasons, your pet must have no food after 10:00 PM the night before surgery. Water is fine until the morning of the procedure. Fasting prevents possible complications during anesthesia.
How do you monitor pets under anesthesia?
A dedicated member of our veterinary team will constantly monitor your pet’s vital signs from the moment they are anesthetized until they are fully awake. We use advanced monitoring equipment to track their heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and body temperature to ensure a safe and stable anesthesia.
How will you manage my pet's pain after surgery?
We use a multi-modal pain management approach, which means we use a combination of medications (before, during, and after surgery) to keep your pet comfortable. This often includes injectable pain medications given in the hospital and oral pain relief medications to be sent home with you. Controlling pain is vital for a smooth and quick recovery.
How long does recovery take?
Recovery time varies depending on the type of surgery. For routine procedures like spays/neuters, your pet is usually back to normal activity within 7 to 10 days. For complex procedures, recovery may take several weeks. We will provide detailed post-care instructions outlining activity restrictions, expected recovery timelines, and follow-up care before you leave.
